A dog discovered in July on a Shawano County, Wisconsin farm with nine gunshot wounds is now living his best life.
Sully, who was severely underweight and quite injured when he was found, thankfully now has a loving family of his own as well as a couch to relax on.
Here's what to know
As WFRV originally reported, Nathan Overholser and his wife, Emily Pease, adopted Sully shortly after they found him.
When they found Sully in Shawano County in July, Overholser was nearby. He told WFRV, "I was actually at the farm where he was found. It was hard to believe that he was still going with all the wounds and how skinny he was."
Repeated visits during Sully's long recovery helped create a bond between the dog, Overholser, and his co-workers. When Overholser told Pease about Sully, she quickly understood why he had become so invested.
"He was just the sweetest dog," Pease told the outlet. She then recalled her husband's pitch, saying, "He told me all about him, and I was like, OK, I guess he's coming home with us."
Once at their home, Sully immediately claimed a spot on the couch. Pease explained to WFRV, "He just found his spot on the couch immediately. That's where he goes every day now. He's a little couch potato."
Sully has since started showing more of his personality around the house. He now plays with the family's other dogs and greets both Overholser and Pease at the door.
The couple also decided to preserve one link to his past through his name. They first called him "Sunny" before learning his original name was Sully. They chose to keep Sully's name in hopes it would make the transition easier, per WFRV.
Where can I learn more?
Sully's recovery and adoption are similar to stories involving other dogs that also survived awful conditions.

• Sadie survived a cruelty case before finally finding safety at home.
• In Helene's hardest-hit area, this puppy bolted for the woods but still found a home.
