U.K. motorists now have another way to shop around at the pump, thanks to a Google Maps feature that shows gas station prices before they pull in. The timing is notable. Diesel has topped £2 per liter ($10 per gallon), and the AA estimated that filling an average 55-liter (14.5-gallon) diesel tank costs about £110 ($145).
Here's what to know
According to the BBC, U.K. gas stations began showing petrol and diesel prices within Google Maps results and station listings on Oct. 8. The app draws that information from the government's Fuel Finder scheme.
Gas stations have a legal obligation to update Fuel Finder within 30 minutes whenever pump prices change. The BBC cited Ofcom data showing that 77% of Britain's adults use Google Maps for general navigation, giving drivers a faster way to spot a cheaper stop without needing a separate app.
While dedicated fuel-price apps have long offered similar tools, putting the feature directly into Google Maps could make price-checking a more regular habit for motorists who already rely on the app to find nearby stations.
More background
Fuel prices worldwide have been heavily influenced by the U.S. war with Iran and Russia's war with Ukraine.
The extraction, refining, and burning of petrol and diesel play a major role in intensifying extreme weather disasters that damage homes, livelihoods, and local economies. Pollution tied to the industry also contributes to asthma, heart disease, cancer, and premature death. Even as households pay £96 to £110 ($126 to $145) per fill-up, corporate profits can remain high, while industry lobbying can slow the shift to cleaner, cheaper energy alternatives that would better protect families and lower costs.
Many motorists will no longer need a separate tool to check prices. Waze already has fuel pricing that reaches about 2 million people in the U.K., while Apple Maps does not directly display fuel prices. That leaves Google in a position to bring the feature to a much broader audience.
What's being done?
The main policy response is Fuel Finder, launched in February by former chancellor Rachel Reeves. Reeves said the program could save households £40 ($53) per year, and the new Google Maps integration is intended to make that government data more useful in everyday driving decisions.
Questions remain about whether the data captures every gas station and every update on time. Clare Lafferty, director at the price comparison site PetrolPrices, said, "There are still sites that have not registered with the scheme at all, alongside sites that have registered but are not consistently updating their prices within the required timeframe." PetrolPrices identified 200 gas stations in September that it did not believe had updated diesel prices on time.
To address those concerns, Google has said it is not simply taking the government feed at face value. Sarah-Jayne Williams, Google's director of product partnerships for Maps and Waze, said the company would verify the data independently and would not display prices it believed were outdated.

For more context on how rising fuel costs and driving rules are affecting motorists, these articles offer a broader view. They cover gas price swings, pump anxiety, EV ownership costs, London's vehicle rules, and the health effects of cleaner-air zones.
• Across the U.S., painful realities of gas prices pushed more drivers to rethink fill-ups.
• Surging petrol and diesel costs are driving pump anxiety, affecting drivers as households weigh alternatives.
• Experts say EVs could really save drivers money over time despite higher upfront costs.
• In London, the expanded ultra-low-emissions zone taxes drivers of inefficient vehicles entering city limits.
• London's clean-air rules improve public health while cutting harmful traffic pollution across communities.
