A black mamba inside staff housing on a South African Big Five reserve is the kind of discovery that can escalate quickly. The priority was simple but serious: get people out safely, then remove one of Africa's most dangerous snakes without harming it.

Here's what to know

That scenario played out at a lodge near Hoedspruit, where staff left their quarters after seeing what they believed was a huge black mamba. In the YouTube video from Snakes in the Hoed, the building was kept closed while snake rescuers Tim and Pep searched the kitchen and living area.

After the workers showed the rescue team where the snake had last been seen, Tim and Pep went into the shut-up staff quarters to look for it. They assumed the snake would be under the fridge, but checked behind curtains and pillows just to be certain.

Tim and Pep were told it was a big snake, but they seemed skeptical until they located the mamba underneath the white fridge.

Tim used a flashlight to look under the fridge, and when he spotted it, he said, "It is a nice one."

Pep agreed, saying, "It looks like a big one."

More background

Tim didn't want to move the fridge for fear of the snake getting to his feet or hurting the snake, so he poked it slightly to try to get it to move. The snake wasn't moving much, but Tim noted that its head started moving to see what was touching it.

When part of its body started coming out the other side of the fridge, Tim used the snake tongs to pull the mamba out.

Once Tim got the snake out from under the fridge, he grabbed it right behind the head and said the snake wasn't in good shape because it was skinny and had ticks. He also confirmed the snake was female.

Tim then placed her into a large bucket so they could move her. While he was doing that, he explained that he had to wait for her to move away from him before he could release her.

Pep and Tim then drove away from the populated area to release her.

Luckily, no one was injured because the professionals were called in to handle the situation.

• At a South African home, water flushed a black mamba from a drain before capture.

• After repeated bites, a handler survived black mamba venom by building a perilous tolerance.

• In Dhaka, experts warned snakes now frequently sneak into human settlements as urbanization spreads.
