UK homeowner questions whether new solar and battery install could impact home insurance

Those who got in touch with their insurers said the companies mostly just recorded the updates.

A U.K. homeowner preparing to install 24 solar panels and a Tesla Powerwall 3 turned to the r/SolarUK subreddit with a question many buyers may not think to ask until late in the process.

They wanted to know if installing solar and a battery would impact their home insurance and if they should contact their insurer about it.

Here's what to know

According to the Reddit thread, the homeowner's insurance renewal was set for the end of October, while the solar-and-battery install was planned for the end of November. They said the battery would sit on a brick garden wall 2 meters (6.6 feet) from the house, prompting a question about whether building insurance would apply.

A number of users said notifying the insurer may not change much.

"I rang my insurers to tell them I had solar and battery," one wrote. "They said thanks for letting us know. That was it; no change to anything!"

Another commenter replied: "Pretty much same. They did say, however, they would have liked to know that the works was happening but still were fine with it."

For households considering a similar setup, adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect a home during outages, save money on energy, and move closer to going off-grid. More background

At the center of the discussion was whether the system needed to be disclosed and how a battery mounted outside, away from the house, might be handled under an existing policy.

Commenters also debated how the equipment should be classified. One person said they raised their contents coverage to reflect the added value, but wrote, "Something fixed like that would be considered part of the building for insurance purposes, not contents."

On the other end of the spectrum, one commenter said they had not informed their insurer about an installation, air conditioning, loft insulation, a new shower, or newly fitted windows.
