A 5- to 6-foot snake loose near a roadway can quickly create a risky situation for both people and the animal.

In Grand Traverse County, Michigan, that happened after reports of a Colombian constrictor near Strait and Cedar Run roads, prompting animal control officers to respond.

Here's what to know

According to UpNorthLive, two Grand Traverse County Animal Control officers secured the snake within minutes. The reptile was taken to a veterinarian for an injury check, and the department later identified the owner after sharing a post about the find.

Even when a snake is not acting aggressively, an animal that size loose near residents can cause alarm and put the reptile at risk of stress, injury, or exposure.

Grand Traverse County Animal Control Supervisor Jamie Bemiss said the officers focused on applying their training and keeping the situation under control.

"My reaction was basically to just lean on what we had been taught and do our best to safely secure the animal and make sure nobody, no people get hurt," Bemiss said.

The department says it receives this kind of call a few times each year.
