When celebrities change their tune on artificial intelligence, the internet tends to notice.

That apparent hypocrisy is fueling backlash among r/FauxMoi subreddit visitors against singer and TV host Kelly Clarkson after a Reddit post accused her of supporting AI only until it began encroaching on music itself.

Here's what to know

The post that set off the discussion embedded an X post from Pop Crave (@PopCrave) quoting Clarkson's comments from on the Las Culturistas podcast.

The original poster titled the thread, "Kelly Clarkson outs herself as a hypocrite who loves AI . . . unless it competes with her on the charts."

"It's controversial, I don't care - I love AI," Clarkson was quoted as saying on Las Culturistas. "There's very amazing things with AI that I'm obsessed with it…BUT, when you see AI artists competing on a chart with humans, I have an issue."

In the replies, one person said, "So AI is great... until its hurting her."

More background

Another person expanded on that idea, suggesting that selective support for AI often exposes which forms of labor people actually value.

"To these people, AI is fine, just.... over there," the commenter declared. "For skills they devalue, areas of creativity they don't understand, and to replace the humanity of people they don't respect."

Many other critics agree that the issue is that some workers are expected to accept replacement without protest. When a public figure appears comfortable with automation taking over less visible creative jobs but objects when the same pressure reaches their own field, people tend to read it as a double standard.

Clarkson's full comments, courtesy of Pop Crave, add a little more context to the discourse.

She reportedly added, "I think it's welcome to the table, it's really cool and creative what we're going to create musically with AI…but I don't think they should be competing with humans…but there can be an appetite for both."

What's being done

Even with that context, Redditors expressed frustration with Clarkson's apparent inconsistency on the topic. Several commenters called it out as part of a larger problem with how people treat celebrities.

"Maybe we should stop idolizing people we don't know, having favorites and treating them like special and unique rays of light," a Redditor wrote. "They're just rich people with (sometimes) great talent, but that doesn't mean anything about their character."

Some commenters also pointed to the possibility that Clarkson's own music was training AI to create the music she objected to.

"There is NO APPETITE for AI music / art / movies / games," another Reddit user said. "I'm sick of this. I've never met a single person who is interested in this s***!"
