In St. Petersburg, a stranded kitten survived a roughly 55-foot fall to the ground below after making its way from an Interstate 275 overpass to a nearby signpost.

Here's what to know

Above 3rd Avenue South on northbound I-275, the kitten was seen on the overpass, prompting a report to authorities, FOX 13 News reported. Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Road Rangers then arrived and found the animal in a precarious spot along the highway.

As the rescue effort grew to include Pinellas County Animal Control and the St. Petersburg Fire Department, the kitten jumped off the interstate and onto a nearby signpost, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the situation took another turn when the kitten fell from the signpost to the ground, a drop of about 55 feet. Troopers and animal control officers still recovered the animal in stable condition.

Authorities have not said whether the kitten has an owner, and they also have not explained how it ended up on the elevated overpass.

Several local agencies were needed because the kitten was not stranded at ground level. They first found it on an overpass and then on a signpost.

According to FHP, troopers and Pinellas County Animal Control recovered the kitten from the ground after the fall and found it in fair condition. Animal control then took the kitten for medical care and evaluation.
