A potentially dangerous encounter was narrowly avoided in Rewa, India, after a snake was found stuck inside a scooter. The almost 8-foot-long snake had reportedly crawled into the vehicle and gotten trapped, with its tail hanging from a handlebar.

Fortunately, no one had gotten on the scooter yet when children in the area noticed the exposed tail and warned others.

Here's what to know

According to Bhaskar English, the incident happened in Pushpraj Nagar, where children spotted the tail jutting from the scooter's handlebar and alerted people nearby. A crowd formed at the scene, but instead of trying to remove the snake themselves, bystanders called a snake rescuer.

Bystanders kept their distance as the rescuer spent about 15 minutes pulling the snake free, gradually easing it out by the tail until it was safely removed from the scooter.

Afterward, the snake was identified as a Dhaman. According to the rescuer, it was non-venomous, though that did not make it harmless to handle. The snake could still bite if it felt threatened.

The incident also rattled scooter owner Ramesh Gupta, who said the experience left him uneasy about even sitting on the vehicle afterward. He said, "One should always check once before getting into a car, scooty or bike to ensure that there is no snake or other creature inside the vehicle."

More background

This was not a forest trail or a remote area, but a scooter in Pushpraj Nagar — exactly the kind of place where many people would not think to check for wildlife before heading out.

Vehicles, homes, and other built spaces can create cool, shaded hiding places that animals may enter, especially in areas where people and wildlife live in close proximity. As BBC Future has explored, human activity can increase the chances of close encounters with wild animals simply by creating more shared spaces.

In this case, the visible tail served as an early warning sign. If no one had noticed it, the snake could have gotten startled by someone trying to use the scooter, and there would have been a risk of a defensive bite.

Keeping a safe distance and calling a professional instead of trying to handle a snake yourself protects both people and the animal, especially when the animal is already stressed.
