When people hear the phrase "leather alternative," many assume it will look cheap, crack quickly, or simply turn out to be plastic in disguise.
TikTok fashion creator Refashioned Hippie (@refashionedhippie) is challenging that perception with examples made from pineapple waste, fish skin, leaves, and even reconstructed dinosaur proteins.
Here's what to know
In a video on TikTok, the creator opened with "I'm a fan of experimental fashion" and then highlighted several ways designers are creating leather-like materials without traditional animal hides.
Among the materials featured was Piñatex from Ananas Anam. It starts with pineapple husks, "which are normally burned at the end of harvesting." But this company turns them into "a durable, long lasting, environmentally friendly leather like material."

Nova Kaeru was another example. The company, which works in the Amazon, has one unconventional leather line based on fish and another made from elephant ear leaves.
Perhaps the most unusual case involved "T. Rex leather" and a bag made from it. The material was built by taking samples from inside bones and using them to rebuild proteins on collagen sheets. As the creator emphasized, "This is not actual Tyrannosaurus Rex skin."
As they explained, the idea was not to create some impossibly rare luxury product, but to show "you can do interesting things without hurting animals." Bidding on the bag reportedly climbed a little above $150,000, far short of the $500,000 goal.
More background
Part of the video's appeal is that it counters a familiar complaint about leather substitutes: People often imagine peeling faux leather or throwaway fast-fashion pieces when they hear the term.
That reaction appeared in the comments too. One commenter who works with leather admitted, "I immediately rolled my eyes at the start of this video," expecting more of the same. The same commenter added, "And then I saw the stuff you're talking about, and I got *real* excited. Thank you for opening my eyes."
Another viewer thanked the creator "for promoting leather alternatives that aren't just plastic." One discussed the state of retail fashion, noting they "hate how much more disposable and fast it's become." They concluded by saying they love seeing alternatives turned into "truly beautiful and unique pieces."
