A $45,000 charge for childbirth might seem outrageous at first glance — in the United States, however, a bill at that level is not an anomaly.
A woman in a viral video showed a delivery bill totaling $45,000. According to KRQE, the situation was a best-case scenario.
Here's what to know
As the outlet noted, labor and delivery costs in the U.S. are so exorbitant they have "become a subject of global fascination."
In the TikTok, the woman displayed an itemized bill she received one month after the birth of her son.
"Thankfully my insurance covered the majority," she wrote — but she still owed $1,982.93.
Based on a MoneyGeek review of data about similar claims from 2021 to 2023, the balance shown in that video was actually lower than is typical.
It found average out-of-pocket costs of $2,563 for a vaginal birth and $3,071 for a C-section. Those estimates factored in the hospital stay, medications, and physician charges, including bills from obstetricians and anesthesiologists.
Some of the steepest average out-of-pocket costs were in places not usually associated with high prices. Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South Dakota each topped $2,500 on average, while Michigan came in at $974.
For patients with high-deductible coverage or more complicated births, out-of-pocket costs can reach $5,000.
More background
The size of these bills often depends on factors other than medical care.
According to MoneyGeek, much of the variation comes from the rates hospitals have worked out with insurers.
Citing the California Health Care Foundation, KRQE noted that hospital price differences are often driven by competition in a local market.
Kristof Stremikis and Catherine Teare of CHCF explained how outside factors such as competition between insurance companies influence hospital bills.
"Decades of research shows that prices for inpatient and outpatient services — from C-sections to CT head scans — are higher when there is less competition," they wrote. "This happens when hospitals, medical groups, or health plans merge or buy their competitors. With fewer choices, a big system in one area can set higher prices and anti-competitive contract terms."
A LendingTree estimate placed the total cost of raising a child to age 18 at about $303,418, per KRQE.
