Toyota's August sales decline represents more than just a rough month for one automaker. It highlights how China's electric vehicle boom is reshaping the global car market — and how even an industry giant can lose ground when consumer preferences shift.

Here's what to know

Weak demand in China for Toyota's gasoline vehicles and hybrids weighed heavily in the slump. Toyota and Lexus sales there fell 23%, contributing to a 7.5% year-over-year drop in global group deliveries, according to The Japan Times. Toyota disclosed the figures Tuesday.

China remains the world's largest auto market, and established automakers are facing intensifying pressure from fast-growing domestic EV brands.

Results differed widely across regions. Toyota and Lexus sales increased 2.6% in Europe and 9.1% in Japan as new models, especially hybrids, sold well, while sales fell 4.4% in the United States and dropped by more than a third in the Middle East.

EV demand is developing unevenly across markets. In China, however, the momentum is increasingly shifting toward locally made electric vehicles.

More background

China's economic climate is adding to the strain for Toyota and other automakers. The country's real estate crisis has made consumers hesitant about big-ticket purchases, which has made cars hard to sell, the Times reported.

Automakers are also coping with inconsistent EV demand and oil prices that have climbed because of the conflicts in the Middle East.

What's being done?

Toyota is not abandoning its low-emissions strategy. The company said hybrid sales were on track to exceed 5 million units for the first time in 2026.

That range of alternative powertrains has helped Toyota in the U.S., where steep tariffs have kept BYD and other Chinese brands out of the market, the Times said.

Meanwhile, legacy automakers in China are under increasing pressure from local EV brands.

Where can I learn more?

Toyota's struggles in China reflect the bigger challenge it faces in the EV era, as these stories explore.

• In Japan, Toyota became the country's favorite EV brand as it targeted young drivers.

• In North America, Toyota's EV-to-hybrid transition is reshaping how legacy automakers plan growth.

• Against Tesla and Ford, Toyota stalled behind rivals as reliability alone no longer guaranteed momentum.
