Shoppers in the United Kingdom are being warned to stop using three tote bags sold through Sainsbury's and Argos after the items were recalled over a chemical safety concern.
All three recalled items come from the Tu range, and the Office for Product Safety & Standards said the substance involved could be harmful to children.
Here's what to know
According to the South Wales Argus, Sainsbury's and Argos pulled the three Tu bags after finding they contained phthalates above the permitted limit. Phthalates are chemicals often used to soften plastic.
The recall includes the Tu Pu Tan Curved Top Shopper, item no. 147160412; the Tu Black Croc Winged Tote Bag, item no. 147166081; and the Tu Brown Belt Handled Core Shopper, item no. 147789704.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said, "Sainsbury's are recalling the above products due to excessive concentrations of phthalates, which pose a chemical safety risk."
"Phthalates may harm the health of children, potentially causing damage to the reproductive system," a spokesperson for the Office for Product Safety & Standards said.
More background
The regulator said the bags do not comply with the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008.
Because they are used to increase flexibility in plastics, phthalates can turn up in everyday consumer goods.
Argos said the problem does not extend beyond these products.
What's being done?
Sainsbury's said, "We're asking customers who have purchased any of these items to stop using them and return them to their local Sainsbury's store for a full refund."
Argos urged customers to spread the word, saying, "Please share this recall notice with anyone who may have purchased, received or used one of these products."
Sainsbury's customers can also get more information through its careline at 0800 028 8303, while Argos customers can call 0800 011 3462.
The Office for Product Safety & Standards said, "We recommend you stop using the products immediately and return them to your nearest Sainsbury's or Argos store for a full refund."
