Scotland's offshore wind buildout is delivering more than cleaner electricity: At the Port of Montrose in Angus, a new offshore wind components plant is expected to create about 80 jobs, while a separate wind project announcement could add another 100.

Here's what to know

According to BBC News, Subsea Micropiles will operate the new factory and is investing £5 million, or just over $6.6 million USD, in it. The development is also backed by £6.7 million ($8.86 million) from the state-owned Scottish National Investment Bank and £1.45 million ($1.92 million) from Scottish Enterprise.

Production at the site is intended for offshore wind turbines used in Scottish waters and in international markets.

First Minister John Swinney said the expansion would help ensure "more of the economic benefits of the energy transition are retained in Scotland, creating high-quality jobs in Angus and the North East, supporting local businesses and strengthening our industrial capabilities."

He also welcomed SSE's decision to identify the Port of Montrose as its preferred operations site for Berwick Bank B, a move expected to create 100 more jobs.

Plans for Berwick Bank B call for up to 307 turbines, enough to place it among the world's largest offshore wind farms and generate electricity for as many as six million homes.

More background

Subsea Micropiles already operates at the Port of Montrose, so the new facility builds on an existing presence rather than starting from scratch.

Chief executive Derek Robertson said, "Scotland has become an important base for our growth." He added, "We rely on the deep pool of talent, skills and offshore experience here to develop our technology, services and expand into a global market."

What's being done?

Public and private funding are being combined to expand Scotland's offshore wind manufacturing. "The investment behind today's announcements is a strong vote of confidence in the sector and in the skilled workforce, innovation and expertise that exists here," Swinney said.
