South Texas keeper reveals giant python's size: 17 feet long, 192 pounds on empty

A massive snake in South Texas is attracting attention after a reptile keeper posted its eye-popping measurements online.

According to the keeper's account, the reticulated python was just 4 years old when she came in but measured in at 17 feet long and weighed 192 pounds following an extended fast.

Here's what to know

The details came from a post on Reddit's r/Snakes forum, where the keeper said the animal had gone more than a month without food before they took her size and weight. They added that she was "192lbs on empty and was pushing 225 when she arrived."

Because of the way the snake's body bends and loops, the keeper said its precise length was hard to pin down. "She's got countless curves on the 17 tape measure we pulled over her so I'd say at minimum she's at 17 feet long," the original poster wrote.

The OP later identified her as a reticulated python, or Malayopython reticulatus, and indicated that she remains quite young for a captive snake of that species, adding that "she will stay on a more lean diet than she was under previous care for sure."

More background

Feeding, housing, transport, sanitation, and safe handling all become more complicated as a snake grows, especially with a species capable of reaching such massive proportions.

The mention of the snake arriving at roughly 225 pounds before slimming down points to another concern: its body condition. In large reptiles, overfeeding can create serious husbandry problems, while proper diet and monitoring can make a major difference in mobility and overall well-being.

Often, people adopt these animals when they are small. But snakes like reticulated pythons can grow into adults that require large enclosures, specialized care, and experienced handling.

Potential owners should also think beyond food and habitat. Costs, including access to reptile-savvy veterinary care, cleaning needs, and emergency plans, all matter when the animal in question can weigh as much as an adult person.

For current owners, maintaining a healthy body condition is just as important as providing enough space. If a snake appears overweight or underconditioned, a qualified reptile veterinarian or experienced rescue can help establish a safer feeding and care routine.

In all cases, anyone owning a python or any animal should always pursue other options, such as surrendering the animal to a wildlife control, rescue agency, or zoo, before releasing any animal they realize they can no longer take care of. Released non-native species can cause significant ecological damage, and if they manage to find a mate from another release, they could begin to establish a foothold in the area, as has happened with Burmese pythons in Florida, if the environment is conducive to their survival year-round.
