Tesla Powerwall owner gets PW3 in recall swap before learning the 10-year warranty won't reset

Still, battery storage remains one of the best ways to protect your home during outages.

When Tesla replaced a recalled Powerwall+ with a Powerwall 3, a homeowner's next question was whether the newer unit would start a fresh 10-year warranty period.

They took to Reddit's r/TeslaSolar forum to see what others had experienced.

Here's what to know

Based on the replies in the Reddit thread, Tesla doesn't appear to be extending the warranty for those replacements.

The original poster wrote, "Just got my PW+ replaced by Tesla due to the recall. Does the new PW3 have another 10 yrs warranty or just the remaining warranty years from original install?"

Replies from multiple aligned commenters indicated the warranty clock does not restart. One wrote: "No. They will only be warrantied for the remaining time period from your original contract. I had asked the same question to Tesla when my PW2 was replaced with a PW3." Another responded more briefly, just saying, "No it does not."

The thread also showed that replacement outcomes were not identical from one customer to another. The top comment read: "Lucky you getting PW3 from PW+. Tesla only replaced the battery part of my PW+ with another PW2."

In another example, one commenter said Tesla replaced two 6-year-old Powerwall 2 units with Powerwall 3s in about 30 days, calling it "a helluva warranty no matter how you slice it."

Not everyone in the discussion agreed with the most upbeat projections about long-term performance.
