Installer warns California homeowner's AC is oversized, offers a free swap

When an air conditioner is too large for a home, it can cool the space quickly and cycle off more often, which may hurt efficiency.

A Sacramento, California, homeowner thought the hardest part of replacing an air conditioner was over. Then the installer said the new system had been sized for a roughly 1,900-square-foot house, rather than a home closer to the 1,550- or 1,600-square-foot size of their home.

As commenters discussed on the r/HVACAdvice subreddit, the mismatch could affect comfort, humidity, and utility bills.

Here's what to know

In a Reddit thread, the homeowner said a 3.5-ton Rheem air conditioner had already been installed when the contractor later realized the estimate was based on a home of about 1,900 square feet.

For context, they noted Zillow lists the house at 1,546 square feet, while county records show 1,603. The contractor then offered a free swap to a 3-ton system.

The homeowner also shared runtime information showing that the 3.5-ton unit held about 72 degrees during an 89-90 degree evening and, on a 100-101 degree day, ran for roughly 4.8 hours after the indoor temperature had climbed to around 78 degrees.

That left the homeowner trying to balance the value of extra cooling power against the possibility of short cycling or weaker humidity control. After adding more measurements, the original poster wrote, "I also did a manual j by subscribing to EDS software and got a 3.2 ton result."

For cases like these, Palmetto's Comfort Plan network can help homeowners find efficient heating and cooling solutions and connect them with vetted installers, whether they're considering a conventional HVAC replacement or a heat pump that could slash energy bills.

More background

When an air conditioner is too large for a home, it can cool the space quickly and cycle off more often, which may hurt efficiency and reduce the time it has to remove moisture from the air. A system that's too small can create the opposite problem by running constantly and still struggling when temperatures get extreme.

Many commenters said square footage alone isn't enough to size HVAC equipment correctly. They pointed to factors such as window area, insulation, ceiling height, ductwork, return-air capacity, and climate. That especially holds true in Sacramento, where summers are very hot but relatively dry.

In this case, most commenters ruled against the contractor.

"The summers won't do anything but get hotter," a Reddit user suggested. "Electric reheat can be incorporated, if needed, to lower humidity."

What can be done?

Before approving a swap, ask for the calculations and test details behind the recommendation.

That means requesting the Manual J load calculation, Manual D duct design, equipment match information, furnace BTU details, and any test results such as a new HERS test, since verified measurements of windows, insulation, and duct sizing can tell you more than a rule-of-thumb estimate.

If you're exploring a replacement anyway, Palmetto's Comfort Plan includes $0-down options that can lower your heating and cooling costs by up to 50%, and it includes 12 years of free maintenance. For households trying to cut monthly expenses without a large upfront payment, that can make a high-efficiency system far more realistic.

Homeowners can also pair solar panels with electric appliances such as efficient HVACs to drive utility costs even lower. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar system and installer for your home and budget, with savings of up to $10,000 on installations.
