Outside a New York subway station, rescuers find mama cat and 6 kittens crammed inside carrier

A family of seven cats, one mother and her six kittens, was found abandoned in a pink pet carrier outside a New York City subway station. 

Fortunately, a volunteer from an animal rescue center was there to help the vulnerable animals before it was too late.

In a YouTube video report, Monica Matute of The Dodo (@TheDodo) told the story of what happened after the cats were discovered near the station, including rescue center Puppy Kitty NYC's role in taking the family to safety.

As Matute described, a volunteer from the rescue saw the pink carrier with a "Free Cat" label after getting off the subway. On closer inspection, she saw it wasn't a lone cat, but rather a mama cat with six kittens in tow.

She called the rescue, which couldn't turn down the opportunity to help. Puppy Kitty NYC immediately brought the mother cat and her babies to safety.

"From day one, Mama Jewel was the absolute sweetest, and it was clear that she had been loved before," Matute said.

She added that now that everyone was safe, Mama Jewel could focus on being a mom for the six young kittens and did a phenomenal job. 

"Day by day, her babies got bigger, healthier, and a lot more playful," Matute noted. "Before long, their different personalities had started coming out."

 The video showed the adorable kittens in action, and Mama Jewel nurturing them.

Animal abandonment cases are especially alarming in dense urban areas, where pets left outside face traffic, weather, noise, and crowds, on top of fear and hunger. When the abandoned animals are nursing kittens, the risks only increase.

Rescue work often begins with ordinary people noticing that something is wrong and acting quickly. A passerby, transit rider, or neighbor may be the first link in the chain that gets vulnerable animals the help they need.

Abandoned pets can be especially vulnerable, and communities often rely on responsive foster networks, shelters, and volunteer rescuers to step in, as in this case.

For this cat family, Puppy Kitty NYC's key contribution was removing them from the area and getting them somewhere secure. The story didn't end there, though. 

Matute revealed that one by one the babies started to get adopted into forever homes. The last piece of the puzzle was Mama Jewel landing a new home. Fortunately, this saga concluded with a completely happy ending.

"And then the update we've all been waiting for," Matute confirmed to close out the video. "Jewel and all six of her babies have officially been adopted."
