Arizona homeowner says Tesla disabled Powerwall for safety, then scheduled service 4 months out

That can undercut one of the main reasons people invest in home storage in the first place.

A Tesla Powerwall is supposed to provide peace of mind when the grid goes down.

But one Arizona homeowner, posting on r/TeslaSolar, revealed a safety shutdown turned that reassurance into a long wait, with the Tesla app scheduling service all the way into the next calendar year.

Here's what to know

The Reddit user said Tesla's app disabled their Powerwall 2 after flagging a problem.

"Got a message on the app this last weekend that a 'low power' issue was detected in my Powerwall 2 and it is now disabled for safety," they wrote. They said the app then set a service appointment for Jan. 19, 2027, which they noted for emphasis was "4 MONTHS FROM NOW."

The replies included others dealing with long waits as well. In the San Francisco Bay Area, one commenter said a recalled Powerwall+ was shut down and service was booked for Dec. 3, a delay of "2 1/2 months," though they said they were excited to get "a new PW3 for free!"

Another commenter said their case appeared to be "waiting for parts" and added that "it's frustrating to not have a date."

That feeling is understandable because for homeowners weighing their options, adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect a home during outages, lower energy costs, and reduce reliance on the grid. Going an extended period without one could get especially unlucky, too, if a big power outage came during that time.

For many households, it can also make solar panels more useful by storing electricity for later use instead of depending entirely on the grid. It may be worth exploring EnergySage for competitive installation estimates and more information.

More background

Of course, the benefits of batteries are dependent on the tech working as promised. The Reddit thread highlighted a practical concern for customers. A battery can be disabled by a safety issue or recall, and the repair queue may then stretch on for months. That can undercut one of the main reasons people invest in home storage in the first place.

The discussion also pointed to confusion around service and system status. Some users said they still had no appointment at all, while others debated whether an integrated inverter should affect solar generation after a battery is disabled.

One commenter said the app created a service case on its own and that "it was all automated." Together, those issues can leave homeowners unsure both about when help will arrive and how much of their energy setup will keep working.

What can be done?

For anyone shopping for storage, it helps to look beyond battery size and advertised backup capacity. Service response times, installer availability, warranty terms, and whether the system depends on an integrated inverter can all affect how useful a battery will be during a real outage.

Current owners can also protect themselves by maintaining a broader outage plan. That may include portable backup power, charged devices, and a clear understanding of whether solar panels will still operate if a battery is taken offline.

Starting with the best product and value from the jump is the best way to get in. To that end, EnergySage has partnered with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery storage solutions.

Another option is Pila, which offers top-of-the-line battery options. Its plug-and-play batteries retail at a fraction of the cost of a whole-home backup system.

Where can I learn more?

This isn't the first time Tesla's customer service or Powerwall product have left customers frustrated or seeking alternatives.

• Homeowners questioning Tesla storage have increasingly weighed alternatives to Tesla's Powerwall after disappointing experiences.

• Tesla is attempting to salvage its reputation as customer service complaints keep mounting.
