A U.K. homeowner hoping to pair solar panels with a heat pump thought they were getting a major discount. However, other homeowners on Reddit who reviewed the quote said the deal may have been masking a much higher starting price.

In a post on Reddit, a Northamptonshire homeowner shared a combined quote of £32,290 for installing solar panels across three roofs and installing a heat pump outside where their boiler is. The installer apparently told the homeowner that they could bring it down to £26,800 if both projects were completed together — a £5,490 discount.
The heat pump was priced at £19,995 for a Samsung 16kW Monobloc, or £12,495 after the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
The solar package was listed at £19,795 for 15 panels rated at 460 watts apiece and a home battery backup system totaling a solid 24 kWh.
Commenters said they suspected the starting figures were too high. One wrote: "The solar is nuts," and detailed how they bought a much larger equipment package for a similar price — though it's unclear if they properly noted the battery system in the quote, given that the two batteries making up the system would cost at least £4,000 on their own, helping to make the high price attached to a modest solar array more understandable, if still a bit high for the country.
Several homeowners in the thread said the solar setup sounded more like a £12,000 to £13,000 system, and one person said they received a quote in March for 16 panels that had come in a little below £11,000.
Some commenters also questioned whether the heat pump itself was sized appropriately. One warned, "With heat pumps, bigger isn't better — you can end up with an oversized system and a bad COP," referring to its efficiency.
