For a homeowner in Canada, a draft coming from beneath the kitchen pantry became a surprisingly tricky problem.

In a Reddit thread, the homeowner said their 1970s house "is not very well air sealed" and described "a nasty draft coming from under my kitchen pantry."
The challenge was the tight clearance. With just 4 inches (10 centimeters) available, a typical caulking gun — often the simplest way to stop a draft — would not fit.
Instead of caulk, one commenter recommended a different approach: "Expanding foam is your best friend! The difference was astonishing when I took off all the trim around my windows, and got everything sealed up."
Another commenter said limited access still might not rule out spray foam, noting, "If the straw is not long enough get a piece of tubing and use that."

Even a small leak like this can make a home less comfortable and drive up heating demand, especially in colder places. When outside air gets in through baseboards, sill plates, vents, or concealed gaps behind built-ins, the heating system has to work harder to keep the temperature steady.

The homeowner also said they had "just had a heat pump installed" and had already spent much of their budget sealing and insulating the rim joists and sill plate, leaving little room to tear out and rebuild the pantry area.

For a space this tight, expanding foam was repeatedly presented as the most practical fix. Closed-cell spray foam was also mentioned as a better option where moisture or freeze-thaw conditions could matter.
Replying to the suggestions, the homeowner said, "Expanding foam was one idea I had. Good to know I'm not completely crazy for thinking of it. … I've seen spray foam with long tubes that would be ideal for such a tight space."
A targeted air-sealing fix can quickly reduce drafts, waste less heat, and delay the far more expensive step of removing built-ins before it becomes necessary.
