Amid storm-related outages in Metro Detroit, one homeowner thought their standby generator had a major problem. However, a quick and easy temporary fix kept the lights on.

The installers eventually texted an unexpected instruction: "Remove the air filter; should fix things."

"Remove the air filter, and, sure enough, generator purrs like a kitten," the original poster wrote. "Full power."
