Texas adds 28 MWh of grid storage from repurposed EV batteries

Texas is expanding its energy storage fleet by repurposing used electric vehicle batteries, according to Solar Power World.

A new project near San Antonio is turning those retired batteries into backup support for the grid, helping meet fast-rising electricity demand without relying entirely on newly manufactured storage systems.

Per Solar Power World, B2U Storage Solutions' second Texas project based on repurposed EV batteries recently began operations. The facility, known as the Bexar Martinez battery energy storage system, is supplying 28 megawatt-hours of grid services to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. 

In all, B2U Storage Solutions said the Bexar Martinez facility brought its total repurposed energy storage capacity in Texas to 50 MWh. In addition to Texas, the company also maintains battery-storage facilities in California.

Across those two states, the company said it manages more than 5,000 reused EV batteries and runs roughly 100 MWh of storage in both solar-paired and stand-alone configurations.

"Bexar Martinez proves that second-life batteries can deliver reliable, cost-effective grid services at scale," said Freeman Hall, CEO of B2U Storage Solutions, according to Solar Power World.

The facilities show that batteries no longer usable in EVs can still have enough useful life to store backup electricity for the grid. Repurposing retired EV batteries not only helps reduce the cost of building a battery-storage facility. It also extends the lifespan of batteries and the materials they contain, conserving resources.

Energy storage can help make electrical grids more resilient and cost-effective by storing electricity when supply is abundant and sending it back out to the grid when homes and businesses need it most.

This makes for a more resilient system during periods of heavy use and reduces strain during times of peak demand. Adding more storage to the system can also help reduce the risk of shortfalls and make it easier to balance fluctuating supply and demand.

Repurposed battery systems in particular also offer a lower-cost option compared to storage sites built entirely with brand-new equipment.
