Anthropic may soon lease Texas data center backed by 2,842-acre gas-fired power project

Anthropic may be eyeing another big Texas expansion, this time through a project that could include dedicated gas-fired power.

New data centers can bring jobs and investment, but they can also put a lot of pressure on the electric grid.

Here's what to know

According to KXAN, Silicon Valley artificial intelligence company Anthropic PBC is discussing a massive data center project in Bastrop County, east of Austin, although no deal has been completed.

Anthropic has been pursuing the effort with Washington, D.C.-based BlackChamber Partners LLC and Dallas-based Pacifico Energy LLC. In the Cedar Creek area, the proposal includes a 2,842-acre gas-powered generation site connected to the data center development.

Because these discussions come after Anthropic's previously reported lease for a large Milam County data center near Austin, they suggest the company is trying to lock in far more computing capacity to train and operate AI systems.

That has broader implications in Texas, where ERCOT is already planning for sharp growth in electricity use. Huge, energy-intensive facilities can change both how much new generation must be added and who ultimately bears the costs of that build-out.

AI can strain the electric grid because advanced models require enormous computing power, and that computing power requires enormous amounts of electricity.

While AI can help optimize clean energy systems, improve forecasting, and make grids run more efficiently, the infrastructure required to run it can use a lot of energy, consume massive amounts of water for cooling, raise security and misuse concerns, and contribute to higher utility costs if new generation and grid upgrades come at a high price.

A gas-fired generation facility built to serve a data center could reduce reliance on the broader grid at certain times, but it also underscores how energy-intensive these projects have become.

Fossil-fuel generation can add climate pollution and local air-quality concerns, even as supporters argue that it provides reliable power.

Texas has welcomed major tech investment for years, but the AI build-out is dramatically increasing the scale. Data centers are no longer just large buildings full of servers; they are increasingly becoming energy projects in their own right.

New data center development can be paired with planning that requires large users to shoulder more of the costs of the generation and transmission they need, rather than shifting too much of that burden to everyday ratepayers.

Public meetings, regulatory filings, and county-level development discussions can help determine who has to foot the bill.

As Texas weighs the benefits of AI investment against the strain it can place on power systems, projects like the one being discussed in Bastrop County could become an important test of who pays for the energy behind the next wave of computing.
