North Port, Florida, is bringing back a familiar source of relief along one of its busiest corridors: shade.
The city has completed a Sumter Boulevard replanting project that added 85 canopy trees after Hurricane Ian stripped away much of its mature tree cover, WTVT reported.

In comments to WTVT, city officials indicated that Hurricane Ian, which hit Southwest Florida in September 2022, brought down about half of the boulevard's mature shade trees.
To help pay for the restoration, North Port secured $38,499.90 from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' hurricane recovery urban and community forestry grant program.
The 85 new trees were divided among four species: 22 live oaks and 21 each of sycamores, mahogany trees, and Shady Lady black olives.
North Port urban forester Ryan Pieper noted that the work was intended not just to restore what the hurricane removed, but to fortify a stronger corridor over time.

"We would consider them a street tree," Pieper explained. "Looking to get some shade over the boulevard as they grow, the grant itself required for no one species to be 25% more than the other. So, it forces us to sprinkle in some variety, which is, as you know, the spice of life."
A more diverse urban canopy is generally less vulnerable to pests, disease, and future disruptions than one dominated by a single species.

"We're grateful to [the] FDACS for making this restoration possible," said North Port Development Services Director Alaina Ray.
