Medical debt can shadow families for years, dragging down credit, limiting housing options, and making everyday bills even harder to manage.

In Santa Barbara County, though, a group of local churches has helped lift that burden for thousands of residents in one sweeping act of generosity.

Here's what to know

Across Santa Barbara County, 7,532 people are set to have a combined $13.1 million in medical bills wiped away after a dozen churches pooled resources and teamed up with nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to erase the debt, Noozhawk reported.

The campaign raised $54,131, which was enough to erase $13,105,578 in medical debt among residents across Santa Barbara County, per Noozhawk. As Undue Medical Debt's website explains, "Every $10 donated relieves $1,000 on average of undue medical debt for families in financial need."

Families did not need to file any applications to benefit from this effort. As Noozhawk reported, qualifying residents will simply receive letters explaining that local churches donated to forgive their balances.

The participating congregations were Vida Church, Valley Christian Fellowship Santa Ynez, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, South Valley Church, Pacific Christian Center, New Life Church Santa Barbara, Lompoc Foursquare Church, First Mexican Baptist Church, First Church of God, First Christian Church, Church for Life, and The Bridge Central Coast, per Noozhawk.

Of the total raised, according to the outlet, roughly $30,000 came from those dozen churches, while the remaining $24,000 came from individual donors and broader community support

More background

For households already trying to keep up with rent, groceries, and utility bills, wiping out medical debt can offer immediate relief while also removing a longer-term financial drag. Even older balances can continue to cause stress, hurt credit, and make it harder to get ahead.

Because the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt specializes in buying and retiring medical debt, even small donations can yield much larger benefits for the community than most donors could achieve on their own.
