A backup generator is supposed to provide peace of mind during a power outage, not come with a surprisingly large repair bill. That's what happened to one homeowner who contacted an electrician about a replacement generator part and received a quote that was two to three times higher than expected.
Here's what to know
In a Reddit thread, a homeowner said they connected with a contractor regarding a quote for a generator interlock kit and 30-amp plug. Instead of providing a quote for the specific part, the electrician recommended an entirely different upgrade.
According to the post, the electrician said the main breaker could pose a reliability problem with an interlock kit and recommended a manual transfer box with six dedicated breakers instead.
The alternative came with a much higher price tag. The homeowner wrote that the electrician's recommended upgrade came "at 2-3 times the cost of an interlock."
More background
The difference is significant. An interlock setup typically uses the existing electrical panel and mechanically prevents the main breaker and generator breaker from being switched on at the same time. A manual transfer box, by contrast, usually adds a separate set of selected circuits.
That distinction can directly affect cost. If an interlock is compatible with the panel, going that route instead of using a transfer box could mean paying one-half to one-third as much, based on the homeowner's estimate of the quote difference.

It can also change how the system works during an outage. A six-circuit transfer box limits the user to a fixed set of circuits, while an interlock-style setup can offer more flexibility, so long as the generator load is managed carefully.
