Study suggests blood helped keep China's 2,000-year-old Huashan cliff art from washing away

Researchers have long struggled to explain why the red paintings on the Huashan cliffs in southern China remain visible. In a place marked by heat, humidity, and heavy seasonal rain, artwork that is about 2,000 years old would ordinarily be expected to disappear.

Instead, many of the images have survived in striking condition — and, according to a new study, researchers think part of the answer may lie in an unexpected ingredient: blood.

According to Phys.org, citing a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, near China's border with Vietnam, the Huashan rock art landscape holds UNESCO World Heritage status and includes thousands of paintings spread across more than 80 sites along 162 miles of river cliffs.

Those cliff paintings show people, boats, animals, musical instruments, weapons, and other figures. Researchers analyzing the pigments say the artists may have used ochre mixed with a binder derived from either human or animal blood.

If blood was part of the mixture, it could help account for how well the paintings have lasted. Scientists think blood proteins may have reacted with the limestone surface to create a stronger, more water-resistant layer that kept the pigment from washing away or flaking off.

That endurance is especially surprising because the climate is hard on ancient paint. Frequent downpours, high humidity, and intense subtropical monsoon heat would usually speed the deterioration of exposed pigments, making the survival of the Huashan images even more remarkable.

At Huashan, that knowledge may have been essential. Painting on open river cliffs meant the artwork had to withstand constant environmental stress over centuries.

Many researchers believe the paintings were created by ancestors of the Zhuang people, the outlet reported, and that numerous scenes relate to ritual life, reproduction, and communal ceremonies. The site also preserves a record of cultural beliefs, social life, and human creativity from more than two millennia ago.

For archaeologists and conservation experts, learning exactly how the paint was made could also shape how the site is protected today. Understanding the original chemistry may help explain what has preserved the images so well — and what could place them at risk in the future.
