Three people were discovered dead in a home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and authorities are now investigating whether a generator may have been operating inside.

The deaths have underscored the risks families can face when electricity is shut off and backup power sources are used unsafely.

After forcing entry into a mobile home, Rocky Mount police found three people dead inside, authorities said. Relatives identified them to WRAL as Tracey Swann, Kenny Swann, and Mahala Scurlock, whom Tracey had adopted.

WRAL also reported that investigators are trying to determine whether a generator used inside the home may have caused dangerous carbon monoxide to build up. Police said that while no official cause of death had been determined, "there appears to be no safety threat to surrounding residents."

Krista Crisp, Tracey Swann's daughter, said the home's power had been shut off and that it "could have played a role in the deaths," per WRAL. Crisp also said the household's utility bill topped a whopping $2,000 and that her mother was the only one in the family working.

Investigators also found three dead dogs inside the residence. Rocky Mount's police chief added to WRAL that foul play is not suspected in any of the deaths.

Carbon monoxide exposure can turn deadly in a matter of minutes, especially when generators are used in enclosed spaces. Because the gas is colorless and odorless, people may not realize they are in danger until it is too late.

When households lose electricity, people may turn to generators or other improvised power sources to keep the lights on or preserve food or medication, but some of those choices can create life-threatening indoor conditions.

As police continue investigating whether generator fumes contributed to the deaths, questions remain about the household's utility shutoff. WRAL reported that the city of Rocky Mount did not answer questions about when the power was disconnected, whether any portion of the balance had been paid, or how long the bill had gone unpaid.

Generators should never be used inside a home, garage, or other enclosed area, even if windows are open. Carbon monoxide alarms can also provide a crucial warning if dangerous fumes begin to build up.
