More than 3,000 lose power in Massachusetts as extreme heat damages buried utility line

Even a short outage can raise the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke as indoor temperatures climb.

During a period of extreme heat, a failure involving an underground utility line left over 3,000 customers without power in Springfield, Massachusetts, WWLP reported.

For residents in the city's Forest Park area, the outage meant losing electricity at a time when many people were likely depending on air conditioning and fans to stay safe during the grueling heat.

What happened?

Eversource's outage map showed a disruption beginning around 7 p.m. on Friday in Springfield's Forest Park area and listed equipment damage as the cause. WWLP reported that the problem affected more than 3,000 of the utility's customers and involved equipment on an underground line.

Eversource said extreme heat contributed to the failure of underground-line equipment. Repair crews worked to fix the issue and bring service back.

Thankfully, by 6:45 a.m. the next day, everyone affected had power again, the company told 22News.

Despite this outage being temporary, this service interruption still posed both a headache and a potential safety risk for thousands of customers during extreme heat.

Why does it matter?

Power outages during high temperatures can pose immediate health risks. Without electricity, homes can lose air conditioning, refrigeration for medicine and food, lighting, and the ability to charge phones needed for emergency communication.

What's being done?

Service was restored for all impacted customers after Eversource completed repairs. Fast restoration is especially important during extreme heat, when every hour without electricity can increase indoor risks.

Utility repairs address the immediate problem, but outages tied to hot weather also point to the need for stronger, more heat-resilient infrastructure. Underground equipment may be less exposed to certain kinds of storm damage, but it is not immune to failures when conditions become severe.

Eversource said its crews worked "as quickly and safely as possible throughout the night" to complete repairs and "return power to the area."
