On a day out, a shy shelter puppy in South Carolina revealed just how much confidence was hiding beneath her fear. At first, Sponge seemed overwhelmed by the world around her. Then another dog joined her — and everything changed.
What happened?
More than 157,000 people liked a TikTok in which A Guy and a Golden (@aguyandagolden) introduced Sponge, a four-month-old puppy living at Greenville Humane Society.

When we first saw her sitting in her kennel, she looked so scared and unsure of everything around her. At only four months old, we knew she didn't deserve to grow up inside a shelter. She needed to get out, experience the world, and most importantly, be shown what it feels like to be loved. For the first half of our day together, Sponge was incredibly shy and nervous. There were little moments when she would start to come out of her shell and get comfortable with us, but you could tell she was still scared of this big new world around her. Then we noticed something…. Every time Sponge saw another dog, she changed. She would stand a little taller, light up, and suddenly seem so much more confident. So we decided to head home and pick up our own "puppy," Ruby. And that's when we finally got to meet the REAL Sponge. 🥹 The second Ruby joined our Shelter Dog Saturday, Sponge came alive. She started playing, running around, and showing us the happy, goofy little puppy that had been hiding underneath all that fear. It was like Ruby gave her the confidence to finally be herself. Sponge showed us that she doesn't need much, she just needs someone to believe in her. Whether that's a home with another dog who can help show her the way, or a patient human willing to give her the love and reassurance she deserves, we know there's an incredible puppy waiting to blossom. She's only four months old, incredibly well-mannered, and has an entire lifetime of love left to give. Now we just need to find the person who will give her that chance. At the beginning of the clip, a shelter employee explained that Sponge came in with siblings and that "all of them are very scared." That nervousness carried into the outing, with Sponge appearing hesitant and withdrawn. "For the first half of our day together, Sponge was incredibly shy and nervous," the creator explained in the caption.
However, that behavior changed after the creator noticed how strongly Sponge responded to other dogs.
"Every time Sponge saw another dog, she changed," the caption stated.
For the rest of the day, the creator brought along their own dog, Ruby, to ensure Sponge was more relaxed and comfortable. "The second Ruby joined our Shelter Dog Saturday, Sponge came alive," he explained.

Later in the video, Sponge was shown getting treats, riding in a vehicle, and looking more comfortable.
Why does it matter?
