A proposed warehouse development in Nutley, New Jersey, is drawing pushback from residents who say their neighborhood should not have to absorb the noise, traffic, and pollution that can come with an industrial-style project.
People living near Washington Avenue are trying to halt the proposal by circulating a "vote no" petition before the plan advances, according to TAPinto Nutley.
What's happening?
Plans for 536–544 Washington Ave., the former Roche Credit Union property, call for a 32-foot-tall, 27,000-square-foot warehouse with four loading docks and 19 parking spaces.
However, the project has drawn opposition from residents in the nearby Cambridge Heights community.
The issue gained wider notice after neighbors spotted an online notice and started a Change.org petition ahead of a Nutley Planning Board meeting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 5.
The board was scheduled to meet at the Nutley Parks and Recreation Building while the Nutley Town Hall chambers are being renovated.

Township scheduling materials included the note "Adjournment Requested," but TAPinto reported that, as of 4 p.m. on August 3, it had not confirmed whether that request had been approved.
Why does it matter?
In the petition, residents stated their position bluntly: "VOTE NO TO WAREHOUSE !!!"
They further asserted that the proposal would threaten public safety while bringing added noise and pollution close to homes.
"The safety of our young children and adults is at risk should this project proceed. The development would introduce incessant noise, an increase in truck traffic, and pollution-filled air from the exhaust of countless vehicles," it read in part.
"These trucks wouldn't just affect our peace and quiet; they could also significantly impact our property values."
Ultimately, the petition's authors maintained that allowing the warehouse project to proceed would transform and industrialize the Nutley they know and love.
"This isn't an industrial area. It's where families have chosen to settle, in search of tranquillity and security," it continued.
"This proposed warehouse does not align with the community's character and will disrupt the peaceful environment that drew us here."
The fight in Nutley reflects disputes playing out in many communities over how to balance redevelopment and land use with the health, safety, and quality of life of existing residents.

Opponents are using a petition and the Planning Board process to press their case before local officials decide whether the project should move ahead.
Residents behind the petition summed up their concerns plainly at its conclusion.
"The consequences of this warehouse could be profound and long-lasting. Our concerns are not just about the ambient noise or the potential decline in property prices, but about the very safety and health of our families."
