A video of a shelter dog finally finding its forever home is gaining thousands of likes and hundreds of comments on Instagram. The video shows a dog named Diamond as she walks out of the shelter facility for the last time and runs toward her new owners.
What happened?
The video was posted by an animal shelter volunteer, Sharing Love (@sharing.lov), on Instagram and later reported on by Dog Time.
According to Dog Time, Diamond returned to the shelter after an adoption. She had arrived there as a puppy with her mother and sister after their family lost housing and could no longer care for them; each of the three dogs was adopted into a different home.
That placement ended when the family moved back to its home country and could not take Diamond with them.
Diamond had become especially popular with staff and volunteers, who were confused by how often she was passed over. Things changed when a woman named Lynda came to meet her and chose to adopt her, the outlet reported.
The subsequent video captures Diamond sprinting along on a walk before she realized she was on her way to a permanent home. Lynda renamed her Kai, and the volunteer said Kai quickly began settling in with the loving family, three dog siblings, and a backyard where she could finally just be a puppy.
Why does it matter?
Moving from shelter to home and then back again can be difficult for a dog, and Diamond went through that cycle before finding stability.
In many cases, when a dog is returned to the shelter, it does not mean they are difficult or hard to manage. In some instances, it reflects changes in a family's housing, finances, or personal circumstances that leave them no longer able to care for an animal.
For Diamond, now Kai, all she needed was a second chance from a loving family.
