Renovation work on a Vienna home turned extraordinary when an Austrian plumber followed a rope protruding from a basement floor and uncovered a chest filled with $2.4 million worth of gold coins.
What happened?
According to Popular Mechanics, while helping renovate a villa in Vienna's Penzing area, an unnamed Austrian plumber spotted a rope set into the cellar floor. He first tried to pull it free, and when it would not budge, he began breaking through the concrete.
The outlet explained that the rope was attached to a rusty metal chest that had been cemented into place. Inside was roughly 66 pounds of gold coins.
Specialists linked the coins to the pre-World War II period based on the recognizable images of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stamped on them.
The find nearly went unnoticed. German media cited in the report said another worker had seen the rope days earlier but brushed it off.
