When spending time in nature, it can be thrilling to spot wild animals in their natural habitat. When those animals present with an unusual feature, however, it can be enough to stop you in your tracks.
This was the case for a conservationist in Wisconsin after coming across an entire herd of all-white deer on the other side of an open field. To top it all off, the sighting occurred on Earth Day.
Footage of the five deer was captured in a video taken by the Waukesha County Land Conservancy and subsequently posted to Facebook.
The stark white deer can be seen calmly grazing among the grass, slowly making their way up a small hill.
The caption of the video notes that these deer likely have leucism or albinism, genetic mutations that reduce the amount of pigmentation in the skin, ultimately giving off a pale white complexion. Albinism results in a completely white complexion with pink or red eyes, while Leucism generally causes white patches with no impact on eye color.
Because these genetic mutations can make survival in the wild more difficult, sightings like these are all the more incredible.

The Waukesha County Land Conservancy was created over 30 years ago to protect and preserve natural ecosystems in the area. The results of their work are evident, considering the rare sight of these thriving deer.
