Dingoes have been the source of TV punchlines for years. However, the wild canine has been known to seriously injure humans.
That includes a six-year-old boy named Gus who was attacked while fishing on an Australian beach, according to 7News.
What happened?
Gus was visiting the island of K'gari with his grandfather. He was about to reel in a fish when a dingo snuck up behind him. The boy sustained cuts and bites on his head and torso and lost half of one ear, 7News reported.
"My son ran, and it barreled him down again and went again," Gus' mother said. She explained how his grandfather was able to get the dingo off after the initial attack but that it took five people 45 minutes to free her son the second time.
Paramedics treated Gus at a nearby beach. He was then flown to Queensland Children's Hospital, and he will need several surgeries to recover.
Why are dingo attacks important?
According to the Australian Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation, there have been 17 dingo incidents on K'gari this year.

It's always a sad day when something traumatic like that happens, especially to a child. Yet in general, the blame for animal attacks on humans does not fall on wildlife. Increased human presence in animal habitats, construction projects, and disrupted natural resources are all often contributing factors. In other cases, human provocation leads to an attack.
These events pose clear dangers to human beings, but they also harm animals, which may be euthanized after attacks, setting back conservation efforts and harming ecosystems at large.
What's being done to protect people and dingoes?
Dingoes are a protected native species in the region. Knowing how to act in places where they live is key to keeping yourself and them safe.
In the aftermath of the attack, authorities offered tips to stay dingo safe, such as staying close to children, walking in groups, and carrying sticks. Never feeding or running from one were also recommended, per 7News.
